In the early 1890s, many towns and villages of the Swiss canton of Graubünden was no easy access. After creating the Rhaetian Railway (Rhätische Bahn or RhB) and its transfer to state ownership began discussions about holding a new railway to the hard to reach residential areas. There were various plans for the construction of roads in the Grisons, in the end it was decided to draw a line that crosses through the valley of the Albula Thusis and St. Moritz. Construction of single-track railway with 1000 mm gauge started in October 1898 and was completed in 5 years.

The line was designed to transport both passengers and goods, but the locomotives of the time were small enough pulling power, so the maximum gradient on the road was limited to 3.5% and the curve radii are large enough. This is to prevent any potential problems with the capacity of locomotives, but has led to the fact that the line could not reach the destination. The difference in height between the bottom of the valley and the pass was such that the deviation of 3.5% was not enough to reach the pass. Therefore, the road has been artificially lengthened: were built curved and spiral tunnels and viaducts. One of the most important buildings on the line Albula tunnel is 5866 meters long. This is one the most highly situated Alpine tunnels in Switzerland, it passes under the mountain at a depth of almost a kilometer. In 2008, the Albula line and Bernina (Saknt passes from Moritz to Tirano town in Italy) were included in the list of World Heritage Sites under the title "Rhaetian Railway in the Albula and Bernina cultural landscape."

The first regular flight on the line was opened in July 1903, but they did not reach St. Moritz, where the station building has not been completed. Fully line was opened in 1904. While on the line planned to use steam power, because of the coal shortage during World War I in 1919, it is fully electrified.

In 1930, the Albula line began to walk one of the slowest Shinkansen in the world - the Glacier Express (Glacier Express). He walks between two major mountain resorts in the Swiss Alps, St. Moritz and Zermatt, the trip lasts 7.5 hours, the train passes through the 291 bridge and tunnel 91, including the location on the Albula line. After more than 80 years of Glacier Express is one of the main passenger trains on the Albula line, as he walks daily schedule.

Currently, the Glacier Express uses modern rolling stock. Revolution was the introduction in the 1986-1993 years of new cars with a panoramic view in which the side windows starts below and partially went to the roof. Passengers can now enjoy views of the Alps without any interference.

On the route running different engines, in particular, the Glacier Express drive powerful locomotives Ge 4/4 III Rhaetian Railway. They were created on the basis of the previous generation of locomotives Ge 4/4 II and came into operation in 1993. Ge 4/4 III can accelerate to 100 km / h and drive as passenger trains and freight. Total from 1993 to 1999, 12 locomotives, each of which has its own name and coat of arms was built.
